General Function of SKeletal Organ System
Performs vital function (support, movement, protection, blood cell production, calcium storage, and endocrine regulation) that enable us to move
Support
:
Main Job: provide support for our body
Without skeleton, the body would collapse
Bones provide a framework for the attachment of muscles and other tissues
Supports the softer tissues
Provides points of attachment for most skeletal muscles
Protection
:
Protects internal organs and fragile body tissues
Brain, eyes, heart, lungs, and spinal cords are all protected by the skeleton
Cranium (skull) protects brain and eyes
Ribs protect heart and lungs
Vertebrae (spine and backbone) protects spinal cord
Movement
:
Bones provide the structure for muscles to attach, which enables the body to move
Tendons are the tough inelastic bands that hold attacked muscles to bones
When associated muscles are attached, it enables the body to move
Storage of Minerals
:
Bone Tissues store minerals like calcium and phosphorus
When required, bones can release minerals into the blood, which facilitates the balance of minerals in the body
Production of Blood Cells
:
The red bone marrow largess bones, thus producing blood cells
Storage
:
Storage of Chemical Energy with increasing age, some bone marrow changes from red to yellow
Yellow bone marrow consists of adipose cells and some blood cells, which is an important chemical energy reserve
