Skeletal System INteraction with other organ systems
One of the most important ways the skeletal system works with other systems is by protection
Some of the organ system the skeletal system interacts with are: nervous, muscular, hematological, digestive, respiratory, & circulatory systems
Nervous System:
Bones provide calcium that is essential for the proper functioning of the nervous system
The skull protects the brain from injury
The vertebrate protects the spinal cord from injury
Sensory receptors in joints between bones send signals about body position to the brain
The brain regulates the position of bones by controlling muscles
Muscular System:
Gives skeletal muscle something to pull against, so skeletal muscle can move
Gives support to body
Muscles connect to skeleton and move
When a muscle contracts, it brings the 2 bones together
Circulatory (Blood) System:
Skeletal system is important to the composition of blood
Bone Marrow is responsible for making new blood cells; Red blood cells are needed to transport oxygen
Blood is also necessary to make bones
Since, bone marrow is the area where blood cells are made, if there is a problem within the system, it can have a huge effect on the hematological system
Skeletal system protects organs like the heart
Digestive System:
Skeletal System protects: mouth, esophagus, stomach, liver, pancreas, and gall bladder
All of these organs are vital for life and are a part of the digestive system
Teeth also play a role because by chewing and reducing the size of the food, it makes it easier to digest
Respiratory System:
Skeletal System protects: trachea, vocal cords, diaphragm, and mouth
The opening of the respiratory system to the outside world like a mouth, would collapse without the support of the bones of the mouth
Provides protection for the soft tissues and organs like lungs
